Missouri Senators want to limit Unemployment Benefits with SB 665

The second half of the 2022 regular legislative session began on March 21, 2022 following the state congressional spring break. Monday afternoon and evening saw time on Senate Bill 665.

Bill sponsor, Senator Mike Bernskoetter of Jefferson City, says this proposal will tie the duration of unemployment benefits to the unemployment rate:

Senate Bill 665 would vary the range of time to receive unemployment, from the current 20 weeks — if unemployment is above 9 percent, to eight weeks — if unemployment is three and a half percent, or lower.

During discussion on the state senate floor, Senator Doug Beck of St. Louis says people need more time to find and start new jobs:

SB 665 has been set aside for the time being.
