As Missourians prepare to enjoy summer holidays, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is reminding everyone to celebrate responsibly and help prevent wildfires.
With fireworks, campfires, and outdoor activities on the rise this season, MDC officials caution that dry conditions, high temperatures, and wind can quickly turn sparks into dangerous fires.
Fireworks Safety: Avoid lighting fireworks near dry grass or leaves, and always have water or a fire extinguisher on hand. Wet the surrounding area before use, and remember that fireworks are not allowed on conservation areas. Be sure to follow all local regulations and firework bans.
Outdoor Burning: Don’t burn brush or debris during dry or windy conditions. Check with local fire departments about current burn bans, and remember—anyone who starts a fire is responsible for any resulting damage.
Vehicle Caution: Driving off-road can pose hidden fire risks. Catalytic converters can ignite dry grass. Never park on tall vegetation, and inspect your vehicle for leaks. Make sure ATVs have spark arresters and carry a fire extinguisher when driving in rural areas.
Campfire Awareness: Clear a safe zone around campfires, keep them small, and never use flammable liquids to start them. Keep extinguishing tools nearby and always put fires out completely before leaving—even for a short time.
If a Fire Starts: Call 911 immediately at the first sign of a fire getting out of control. To report suspected forest arson, call 800-392-1111. Tips remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
Prescribed fire, when properly used, remains an effective tool for habitat management. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/your-property/fire-management/prescribed-fire.
