The November meeting of the Friends of the Garnett Library will be held on Friday, November 14, from noon to 1 p.m. This meeting will be at the Historic Post Office located at 204 E. Main, West Plains, Missouri. Kathleen Morrissey, president of the West Plains Council on the Arts, and Dr. Jason McCollom, associate professor of history at MSU-WP, will present the program regarding an awarded grant.
The West Plains Council on the Arts has been awarded a prestigious semiquincentennial grant from Missouri Humanities aimed at illuminating America’s rich heritage through 250 years of history. In collaboration with the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC) and Missouri State University–West Plains, the grant titled “The Missouri Ozarks through the lens of 250 years of history,” will celebrate our rich history. Missouri Humanities is one of the 56 state and territorial humanities councils that receive support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
Through 2026, a series of events and activities will invite the community to share personal stories and explore pivotal historical themes such as immigration and genealogy, the Civil War, the world wars, and the evolving cultural landscape of the Ozarks. These efforts will contribute to a broader understanding of the region’s role in shaping the nation’s narrative.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Cost of the lunch is $10, payable at the door. Those wishing to eat should make reservation by calling 417-255-7940 or emailing FriendsofGarnettLibrary@MissouriState.edu by Tuesday, Nov. 11.
