Howell County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Jury Duty Phone Scam

The Howell County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a phone scam involving an impersonator claiming to be a deputy. On Wednesday, a citizen reported receiving a call from a restricted number by someone identifying himself as “Deputy Brian Whitlock.” The caller falsely claimed the woman had missed jury duty in October and needed to report to the Sheriff’s Office immediately. He insisted she stay on the line or face arrest.

Fortunately, the citizen recognized the scam and disconnected the call.

Officials stress that the Howell County Sheriff’s Office will never:

  • Demand payment or threaten arrest over the phone.
  • Call from restricted or blocked numbers.
  • Require individuals to remain on the line.
