Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced a lawsuit against the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, accusing the organization of violating the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act by misleading women about the risks associated with chemical abortions.
The lawsuit claims Planned Parenthood promoted the abortion pill as being as safe as medications like Tylenol or penicillin, despite data showing that more than 4.5% of women who use the drug end up in emergency rooms. The Attorney General’s Office alleges that these claims, which appear on Planned Parenthood’s website and are accessible to Missouri residents, mislead women and prioritize profit over safety.
Bailey is seeking over $1.8 million in civil penalties, restitution for Missouri women who received abortion pills in the last five years, and reimbursement for taxpayer-funded emergency care. The petition also asks the court to bar Planned Parenthood from making these claims within Missouri.
The full legal filing is available through the Attorney General’s Office.
