From the City of West Plains:
WEST PLAINS, Mo. – April 13, 2026, marks the 98th anniversary of the Bond Dance Hall explosion, one of the most tragic events in the history of West Plains.
On the evening of April 13, 1928, an explosion destroyed the Bond Dance Hall in downtown West Plains, claiming the lives of dozens of community members and injuring many others. The impact of that night continues to be felt nearly a century later, as families and the community remember those who were lost.
As this anniversary is observed, the City of West Plains has begun early planning efforts for a respectful and educational commemoration of the 100th anniversary on April 13, 2028.
The centennial observance is being developed as a community-focused remembrance that will honor the lives lost, provide historical context, and offer opportunities for reflection. Preliminary plans include educational outreach for local students in the days leading up to the anniversary, a temporary historical exhibit featuring archived materials and information about the event, and an evening program centered on the history and lasting impact of the explosion.
As planning continues, the city is seeking assistance from the community to help ensure the story of the Bond Dance Hall and the people affected is preserved and shared with accuracy and care.
Individuals who have a connection to the event, including family ties to victims or attendees, historical photographs, documents, or personal stories, are encouraged to come forward.
Those willing to share information or materials may contact the City of West Plains by emailing emily.long@westplains.gov.
The City of West Plains is committed to honoring this significant moment in the community’s history with the respect it deserves, and to ensuring that the lives lost are remembered for generations to come.
