Growing Tomatoes 101 May 1st

The University of Missouri Extension will host a hands‑on tomato‑growing workshop on May 1st at the Howell County Extension Office in West Plains. The class begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be led by Josh Dunn, MU Extension field specialist in agronomy.

With just two weeks to go, Dunn is encouraging gardeners to register for “Growing Tomatoes 101,” a research‑based, locally focused program designed to help growers improve success with the Ozarks’ most popular garden crop. The workshop will walk participants step‑by‑step through tomato production, explaining the science behind planting, fertilizing, pruning, and managing common problems — and why tomatoes behave the way they do in this region’s soils and climate.

The two‑hour class will be held at the MU Extension office at 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd. The cost is $5, and advance registration is encouraged to ensure educational materials are available. To sign up, call 417‑256‑2391.

Dunn says the workshop is ideal for both new and experienced gardeners looking to boost plant health and improve yields heading into the growing season.
