A domestic dispute in Howell County escalated into violence Monday evening, prompting a swift response from West Plains police and resulting in multiple felony charges against a local man.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched to a residence within city limits following reports of a domestic altercation involving a knife. The investigation revealed that Charles Kemp, a resident of the home, became enraged after being denied a soda by his brother and mother. Kemp allegedly retrieved a black-handled serrated steak knife, threatened to kill one of the victims, and advanced toward them while making the threat.
A second victim intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation but sustained a puncture wound to the left hand during the struggle. Both victims reportedly urged Kemp to drop the weapon, which he eventually did. Officers recovered the knife and placed it into evidence. The injured victim’s wound was consistent with a knife puncture, according to police.
Kemp was read his Miranda Rights, acknowledged understanding them, and agreed to speak with investigators, though he declined to provide details about the incident.
He has been formally charged with:
• Domestic Assault – 2nd Degree
• Armed Criminal Action
• Unlawful Use of a Weapon
