The water level of Norfork Lake has reached near record level and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has announced the opening of the dam.
From the Corp of Engineers:
We are opening the remaining three spillway gates, meaning all twelve gates will be open half a foot. The spillway release will be approximately 6,600 cubic feet per second, with a total release (including hydropower units) of about 12,000 c.f.s. This release will continue until the flood pool crests and recedes to elevation 579’ as outlined in the water control plan.
Current Water Levels: The top of the flood pool on Norfork Lake is elevation 580’. As of now, the flood pool stands at 579.61’ and rising.
Historic Data: The pool of record at Norfork was set on April 11, 2008, at elevation 581.01’. The next highest level was recorded on May 2, 2008, at 580.9’.
What is Surcharge Storage? Surcharge storage is extra flood storage created by operating an overflow spillway. In gated spillways, opening the gates raises the top of the gate, providing additional temporary storage while optimizing water release. In ungated spillways, water flows over the spillway only if the lake level rises above it, creating temporary surcharge storage.
We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary. Stay informed and stay safe!
