National Family Literacy Day was established by Congress in 1994 to highlight the importance of reading and learning for the entire family and emphasizes the impact parents have on their children’s learning. The NSDAR created a Literacy Promotion Committee in 1989 and encourages their members to be involved in helping both children and adults develop literacy skills. Education is a cornerstone for the NSDAR.
