(West Plains, Missouri) – The City of West Plains received federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to complete a Vision Zero Safety Action Plan.
This award is part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program, an initiative to fund regional, local, and tribal plans to prevent roadway deaths and injury. Vision Zero is a commitment to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, making our streets safer for everyone, whether they are walking, biking, or driving. Through strategic planning, community engagement, and targeted interventions, West Plains aims to create a transportation system that prioritizes human life above all else. By addressing factors such as street design, speed management, enforcement, education, and policy development, Vision Zero seeks to prevent crashes before they occur, saving lives and enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
To provide the community with a project update and gather valuable insights, the City of West Plains, will be hosting the project’s second public event in conjunction with Food Truck Thursday on August 21, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Civic Center Parking Lot, located at 110 St. Louis Street. This event is a come-and-go event with no formal presentation. Attendees will have the opportunity to review engagement findings and provide input into Plan recommendations for key corridors and intersections in West Plains. Attendees will identify their preference for how the Plans recommendations should be prioritized to work towards eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. This meeting serves as a valuable platform for community members to share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions, playing a critical role in shaping the future of our Vision Zero initiative.
Your input will help guide the Plans outcomes aimed at achieving safer, more equitable streets for all. As we work toward creating safer and more accessible streets that meet the diverse needs of our community, your input is essential. Together, we can design streets that foster a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone. The Planning process has been ongoing since November 2024 with an anticipated completion in November 2025.
