Willow Springs, MO. – This weekend on Sunday, November 2nd, the clocks will go back one hour as Daylight Savings takes effect once more. This time of the year not only signals lost sleep, but also the suggested time to check your fire alarms. The Willow Springs Fire Department has prepared a list for good safety tips for going into the tail end of the year.
* 1. CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHECK YOUR BATTERIES!
This is the perfect reminder! Replace the batteries in ALL of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. A working smoke alarm is your first and best defense against a devastating fire. Test them immediately after changing the batteries!
* 2. Inspect Heating Systems!
Before you rely on your heating system this winter, schedule a professional to:
* Inspect your Furnace.
* Clean your Chimney. Creosote buildup in chimneys is a leading cause of residential fires.
* 3. Learn from Recent Local Incidents!
Tragically, the Willow Springs Fire Department has responded to 3 structure fires in the past week alone. One of these fires was officially confirmed to have been caused by a portable space heater. Please use space heaters with extreme caution: keep them away from anything flammable (like curtains or bedding) and never leave them running unattended or while you sleep.
* 4.Practice Your Escape Plan!
Ensure every person in your household knows TWO WAYS OUT of every room in your home. Practice your escape plan together and designate a safe meeting spot outside. Minutes save lives!
Your vigilance saves lives. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Please take these steps this weekend.
