The Wright County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers posing as attorneys and claiming a loved one—often a son—has been arrested or involved in a serious accident. The scammer then demands immediate payment to secure the person’s release. In the most recent report, deputies confirmed the individual in question was not in jail and no such incident had occurred.
Officials remind the public that law enforcement and courts do not call to request money, and legitimate attorneys do not demand payment over the phone. Residents are urged never to send money, gift cards, or wire transfers based on an unsolicited call. Anyone who receives a similar call should hang up immediately and contact their local law enforcement agency.
