Abby Hay’s Go-Ahead Home Run Lifts Mizzou Over Kansas in Border Showdown

The Tigers picked up the win as Hay hit her fifth home run of the season in the seventh inning against Kansas.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior Abby Hay recorded the game-winning home run in the seventh inning as Mizzou (23-22, 6-9 SEC) took down Kansas (29-13, 10-5 Big XII) 4-2 in the Border Showdown on Wednesday, April 15, at Arrocha Ballpark.

Hay hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh to give the Tigers the victory, as freshman Abby Carr picked up the win in the Border Showdown.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mizzou got up early, as freshman Sidney Forrester came through with a two-out RBI to score fellow freshman Carr, making it 1-0 in the top of the first. The Tigers manufactured another one in the second inning, as junior Claire Cahalan scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Stefania Abruscato to make it 2-0.

The remainder of the first half would be a pitcher’s duel with different circumstances. The Jayhawks used three pitchers within the first five innings, while junior starting pitcher Marissa McCann cruised through five, allowing just two hits.

However, MU got in trouble in the bottom of the sixth, as McCann put runners on the corners with no outs. Carr relieved the junior and got the first two outs with ease, before KU tied up the game – 2-2 – with a two-out triple.

In the top of the seventh, Carr reached safely, and Hay made the pitcher pay with a home run to right field – her fifth of the season.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Jayhawks once again threatened with runners in scoring position. However, Carr finished the job with a strikeout, as Mizzou took the game 4-2.
