The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Buffalo Bills 28-21 on Sunday, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes endured one of the toughest outings of his career. Mahomes completed 15 of 34 passes for 250 yards with one interception, marking the first time in his nine-year regular-season career that he finished a game with a completion rate below 50 percent. Despite finding the end zone twice on rushing scores from Kareem Hunt and Rashee Rice, Kansas City’s offense struggled to maintain drives against a relentless Buffalo defense that sacked Mahomes three times and hit him 15 more. Harrison Butker converted both of his field goal attempts to round out the Chiefs’ scoring.
Kansas City took a brief 10-7 lead early in the second quarter after Butker’s 46-yard field goal, but Buffalo answered with two straight touchdowns and held control for much of the game. The Chiefs mounted one final drive in the closing seconds, reaching the Bills’ 40-yard line before three incomplete passes ended the comeback attempt. Rookie defensive back Maxwell Hairston sealed the win for Buffalo by knocking down Mahomes’ last throw toward the end zone.
The loss dropped the Chiefs to 5-4, marking just the third time since Andy Reid became head coach in 2013 that the team has opened a season with four or more losses through nine games. The setback also created a 2-game gap between Kansas City and Denver (7-2) in the AFC West playoff race.
The Chiefs play in two weeks at Denver.
