The Cardinals’ star player swung a hot bat during the team’s 6-4 series-opening victory against the Marlins at Busch Stadium. Nolan Arenado went two-for-three at the dish and drove in four runs. Miles Mikolas earned the win after surrendering three runs on seven hits over six innings. Jordan Hicks secured his eighth save of the season as the Cards improved to 41-and-53. Dylan Carlson went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot. However, St. Louis is still last in the NL Central. Jordan Montgomery takes the bump for the Cardinals against Miami tonight.
The Cardinals are parting ways with one of their once-promising relievers. The team designated left-hander Genesis Cabrera for assignment yesterday. Cabrera shined for St. Louis during the shortened 2020 season, but his numbers have gotten worse in each season since. In 32 games this year, the 26-year-old is 1-and-1 with a 5.06 ERA. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill is expected to take Cabrera’s spot on the 40-man roster once he is activated from the 60-day injured list.
The club said when O’Neill returns he will join Lars Nootbar and Jordan Walker as the trio leading the outfield. That could pave the way for a trade involving Dylan Carlson
