Mizzou Soccer’s Isabella Alessio Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southeastern Conference announced the recipients of this week’s SEC honors on Monday. Mizzou Goalkeeper Isabella Alessio was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out the rival Jayhawks in a 1-0 victory on Saturday night.

The shutout victory was the second of the season for Alessio, who bookended the spring slate with 1-0 victories over Creighton and Kansas.

In the contest, Alessio made five saves and prevented the Jayhawks from finding the net. The Jayhawks were close to pulling ahead midway through the first half. A shot from the left side of the box toward the bottom-right corner of the goal was deflected just enough by Alessio to redirect the ball off of the post, keeping the game scoreless.

In the end, the Tigers were able to pull ahead on a Kansas own goal. Alessio kept the door closed to preserve the shutout victory.

Alessio transferred to Mizzou from South Dakota and she has made an immediate impact on the Tiger program, playing in 12 matches, starting each of them. She holds a 1.51 GAA and has made 45 saves at the conclusion of the regular season.
