NICK PLUMMER & WILFREDO PEREIRA NAMED CARDINALS TOP MINOR LEAGUERS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY

  1. LOUIS, Mo., August 5, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today their selections for Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for July, with Springfield Cardinals (AA) outfielder Nick Plummer and Peoria Chiefs (High-A) right-handed starter Wilfredo Pereira taking the honors for the first time.

Plummer, who turned 25 on July 31, hit for an .326 average, with six home runs, five doubles, a triple, 21 RBI and 19 runs scored in 24 July games with Springfield.  His .446 on-base percentage led all Double-A Central qualified hitters and he finished second in the league with a 1.044 OPS.  Incredibly, Plummer reached base safely in all 24 games last month (hit safely in 19) and currently owns a 30-game streak of reaching safely.

“Nick’s excellent start offensively in July lead him to an outstanding month and a well earned ‘Player of the Month’ selection,” said Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.

The 5’11”, 230-pound left-handed hitter was the Cardinals’ 1st round selection (23rd overall) in the 2015 MLB Draft out of Brother Rice HS (MI).  Plummer has enjoyed a breakout season with Springfield, slashing .300/.410/.494 with 27 extra-base hits and 40 RBI in 74 games played.  He hit a career-high three home runs, including an extra-inning, come-from-behind, walk-off homer on July 8 vs. Tulsa.

Pereira, 22, had the lowest earned run average (2.73) among all Cardinals minor league starters in July (minimum four games started), striking out 34 batters across 29.2 innings, with a 0.94 WHIP.  A native of Puerto Armuelles, Panama, he posted a 1-2 mark with a .190 average against over five starts and a perfect, five-inning relief appearance on July 1.

“Wilfredo finished a productive July with a strong six innings, four hits, walking one and striking out 8, on the way to earning ‘Pitcher of the Month’ honors,” stated LaRocque.

Signed as an international free agent in March 2016, Wilfredo appeared in 18 games between Peoria (Low-A) and Johnson City (Rookie) in 2019 and ranked 8th among all Cardinals minor league pitchers that year with a 1.07 WHIP.  He has spent the entire season at Peoria this season, accumulating a 4.13 ERA in 56.2 innings pitched (21 games).  After appearing in 16 games out of the bullpen to begin the season, Wilfredo was moved to the starting rotation on July 7 and has tallied a 3.28 ERA over his first five starts.
