There hasn’t been an ‘official’ announcement from the International Olympic Committee or the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, but IOC member Dick Pound says the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed due to the coronavirus.
Pound said, “On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
Pound also said the games will likely be moved to 2021. The details will be worked out in the next four weeks and the IOC will apparently announce its next steps soon.
Some countries were already taking a tough stance, saying they would pull out of the 2020 Games if they weren’t postponed. Athletes are continuing to train which is increasing their risk of exposure to the virus.
