The Liberty Eagles played their second home game of the season this week, facing the 1-2 Ava Bears. Eagles looked to bounce back after their 21-14 loss to the Thayer Bobcats.
st Quarter: Toss won by the Ava Bears and the ball is down to the 35 yard line. Bears will start 1st & 10. Liberty lucks out as the first offensive play for the bears is a touchback. Kyle Roberts with an early good play, breaking two tackles and this will give Liberty a new set of downs. As Aiden Lane for the bears sets up for a steal it is blocked and caught back by Eagles’ Eddie Rodriguez. Eagles keep the offensive pressure going as Jasper Melby makes a 27–yard pass to Jaren Rutledge for the first offensive play of the night. Eagles take the lead early 6-0. On defense, Reed Tune for the Eagles blocks the next play for AIden Lane on the Bear offense. Eagles almost make it in again for another in-zone but are backed up five yards by the In-zone judge as Reed Tune had some help making it in. This gives the ball back to the Ava Bears. But after the next few downs, Ava is forced to punt as ball goes out of bounds. Eagles hold at 6-0 after one.
nd Quarter: Eagles having issues on defense as they end the first and start the second. But a five yard penalty shallows things out for the Ava Bears, this gives Eagles some more momentum. Enough to get the Bears to turn over the ball once more. But finally a break in this little offensive set as Kyle Roberts get right open and runs it in for 62-yards, Eagles’ try for the extra point but once again miss. This will put the Eagles up now 12-0. Liberty ends up fighting the Bears pretty hard on downs for the next five or so minutes in the quarter. A near steal by Kyle Roberts, but Eagles struggling with holding possession as they get a slew of penalties. With 33.4 sec to go in the Half, Eagles finally run it in for another as Jasper Melby gets it in to make it 18-0 where they hold at the half.
rd Quarter: A somewhat uneventful 3rd Quarter. Liberty gets at least two steals, one by Jasper Melby, the other by Reed Tune. But neither team with a very good position on offense. Liberty keeps the lead 18-0 at the End of Three.
th Quarter: Ava Bears end up getting into a good position for a field goal which they make. This puts them on the board 18-3. Make this 25-3 as Jasper Melby gets open on the next Offensive position, securing them to hold on for the last eight minutes of play.
