On March 26, 2025, the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into a burglary at Oregon-Howell R-III (Koshkonong R-3) School.
On May 1, 2025, investigators identified a suspect through cooperative efforts with an outside agency. The suspect closely matched school surveillance footage, and evidence was shared with the Wapello County, Iowa, Sheriff’s Office.
The Oregon County Sheriff’s Office was notified on December 31, 2025, that Curtis Lee Barton, 40, was indicted in U.S. District Court for burglarizing more than 20 rural schools and businesses in Missouri and Iowa.
Local charges have also been filed against Barton in connection with the Oregon-Howell (Koshkonong R-3) School burglary.
