Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 21 Alabama

Mizzou women’s basketball fell to No. 21 Alabama 74-63 on Monday night at Mizzou Arena.

Junior guard Grace Slaughter led the Tigers (12-7, 0-4 SEC) and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 23 points and nine boards. Slaughter scored 17 of her total in the first half.

Junior guard Abbey Schreacke added 12 points, behind four makes from beyond the arc, and tallied three rebounds.

Junior guard Shannon Dowell recorded 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Both programs took the opening minutes of the content to settle in offensively. Slaughter raced down the floor and eurostepped a defender for a layup to put Mizzou up 9-7 just over five minutes into the contest.

In the back half of the frame, Alabama went on a late run to lead 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Trailing by 17 early in the second, Slaughter drove left into the paint, crossed over and banked in a layup from the right side. The layup sparked a 16-2 Tigers run that was accelerated by triples from Slaughter and Schreacke.

The scoring charge saw Mizzou trailing just 32-29 at the half.

Alabama slowly stretched the lead to seven in the opening minutes of the third, but a 3-pointer by junior guard Lisa Thompson sliced the lead to four at the five and a half minute mark.

Moments later, redshirt senior guard Jayla Smith buried a triple from the left wing to bring Mizzou within three.

Trailing by 10 with less than three minutes remaining in the period, Schreacke and Thompson connected from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions as Alabama took a 53-49 lead into the fourth.

Alabama built its lead back to 10 in the opening minutes of the final frame and maintained the advantage until the closing buzzer.
