True QB battle as Mizzou begins spring practice

Missouri football will have a true quarterback competition heading into the 2026 season. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz says the Tigers live by the core value “always compete,” and that includes the battle for QB1 with spring football practices starting this past weekend.

The frontrunner is transfer Austin Simmons, a left-hander who began his career at Ole Miss Rebels and started Week 1 last season before an injury limited him to 259 career snaps. He threw for 744 yards in eight games in 2025.

Returning sophomore Matt Zollers, who was pressed into action as a freshman and logged 261 snaps, is expected to push Simmons. Nick Evers and freshman Gavin Sidwar round out the competition as Missouri looks to settle on its starter.
