Alton R-IV Superintendent Holly Reese Announces Retirement; Ryan Chowning Named Successor

After 27 years of dedicated service, Alton R-IV Superintendent Holly Reese has announced her retirement, effective at the end of the current school year. Reese, a lifelong member of the Alton community and graduate of the district, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the schools and families that shaped her life and career.
“It has truly been the honor of my career,” Reese shared. “Alton R-IV is my home, and I will always be a Comet.”

The Alton R-IV Board of Education has selected Mr. Ryan Chowning to succeed Reese as Superintendent beginning July 1. Chowning currently serves as Assistant Superintendent in the Mountain View–Birch Tree R-III School District and brings extensive experience in school leadership, including roles as elementary and middle school principal.

A 2004 graduate of Mountain View–Birch Tree, Chowning is known for his work in district operations, transportation, safety, facilities, and instructional leadership. He and his wife, Candice, have three children: Avary, a freshman, and twins Eli and Aliya, both in sixth grade.

Reese expressed confidence in Chowning’s ability to lead the district forward, citing his integrity, care for students, and understanding of rural education.
