According to the Sheriff’s Office, several red flags have been reported, including texts sent from international phone numbers, urgent language demanding quick action, and links requesting payment or personal information. Officials emphasize that the Missouri Department of Revenue does not send text messages demanding payment for traffic violations.

Residents are urged to avoid clicking suspicious links, refrain from sharing personal or financial information, and delete the message immediately. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted is encouraged to contact the Carter County Sheriff’s Office or report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the community to share this warning to help prevent others from falling victim.
