From the City of Ava:
We are issuing a scam alert regarding a deceptive text message currently circulating that claims to be from City Utilities (or your local utility provider).
The message, which typically states a bill is due and provides a link to “view your bill” or “pay,” is completely fake and is an attempt to steal your personal and financial information.
What the Scam Text Looks Like:
It claims your bill is due (e.g., “$288.34 is due on 11/21/25”). See attached photo.
It often includes a suspicious-looking shortened link (like a bit.ly/ link or one that doesn’t look like the utility’s official website). It comes from a generic phone number, not the utility’s official number.

What You Should Do If You Receive This Text:
DO NOT Click the Link:
Clicking the link could install malware or take you to a fraudulent website designed to steal your information.
Delete the Message Immediately: Don’t reply or engage with the sender.
Verify Your Bill Directly: If you’re concerned about your account status, always use the official channels. Log into your account through the utility’s known, official website, or call their established customer service number (check your physical bill or their official website for this number). Never use a phone number or link provided in a suspicious text message.
Report the Scam: Utility companies and local authorities need to know these scams are circulating.3
Remember: Legitimate utility companies typically do not send urgent texts demanding immediate payment or providing shortened links for bill viewing or payment.
