Troop G officer Robert Crewse was responding to a suspicious vehicle call north of Mansfield Wednesday morning when he came upon Rey inside of a vehicle that had incorrect plates. Rey reportedly became agitated, gave Crewse a false name, and refused to exit the vehicle. Kinder says Crewse called for back-up a short time later.

The firefight started when Rey began firing a handgun at Crewse, as well as a Mansfield police officer and another trooper who showed up to assist Crewse. Crewse was grazed on his head by one bullet and was shot in the side. That shot was stopped by the officer’s vest. Rey was shot several times.
