West Plains, MO-The Harlin Museum Board of Directors has made the difficult and heartfelt decision to demolish the original Harlin House portion of the museum. After multiple inspections by contractors, it was determined that the structure was beyond repair. The foundation had deteriorated significantly, and the basement walls were collapsing—posing a growing safety risk.
While we mourn the loss of this historic structure, the newer brick section of the museum, known as the Hathcock Gallery, remains intact and continues to serve as the heart of our exhibits and programs.
All historic items from the Harlin House were carefully removed and are safely in storage. In addition, any architectural elements or materials that could be salvaged have been preserved. The museum remains committed to honoring the history of the house and incorporating these saved items into future displays or educational projects.
The Harlin Museum is committed to rebuilding and revitalizing its mission. We see this as a new beginning—an opportunity to grow, evolve, and serve the community with renewed energy. We are incredibly grateful to Carey Stewart’s Construction, Bob’s Construction, RP Lumber, and the many volunteers who offered their time and effort during this challenging transition. We also sincerely thank West Plains Bank & Trust, Community First Banking Company, FNBC, and the generous anonymous donors who have already stepped forward to support us.
Yet our work is far from over. To preserve what remains and rebuild something even better, we ask for the community’s continued support. Your donations—of time, talent, or funds—help us protect treasures like the Broadfoot Collection, create engaging programs for families and children, and launch new events that enrich the region.
The Harlin Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All contributions are deeply appreciated and tax-deductible. To get involved, please reach out to us through our Facebook page or stop by the museum Thursday through Sunday Noon to 4 pm.
Together, we can preserve the past while building an inspiring future.
