With Independence Day approaching, Colonel Michael A. Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is urging Missourians to prioritize safety during holiday celebrations. Whether traveling, boating, or hosting gatherings at home, Missourians are reminded to follow all traffic and boating laws to ensure a safe and enjoyable July 4th weekend.
The official holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. During the same period in 2024, Missouri saw 1,366 traffic crashes resulting in 14 deaths and 560 injuries. Troopers made 149 DWI arrests, and there were 10 boating crashes with seven injuries and no fatalities.
To help reduce incidents, the Patrol will maximize staffing on roadways and waterways and participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort) and Operation Dry Water, which targets impaired boat operators.
Boaters are reminded that it is illegal to discharge fireworks from a vessel and that alcohol and boating do not mix. Life jackets are strongly encouraged for all waterway users. Drivers are also urged to buckle up, obey speed limits, and never drive under the influence.
Anyone in need of assistance on Missouri’s roads or waterways can call the Patrol’s Emergency Assistance line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 from a cell phone. For updated road conditions, visit www.modot.org.
