The Howell County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of School Resource Officer. The School Resource Officer (SRO) program is a well-recognized initiative that places law enforcement officers in schools. The responsibilities of a School Resource Officer include:
– Offering law enforcement support to ensure a safe atmosphere for students, teachers, and the wider community.
– Building and maintaining a collaborative relationship with school leaders. Helping schools prepare for and respond to emergencies and crises. Being present and approachable during school hours and after-school events.
– Actively engaging with students to serve as a positive influence, enhance safety, discourage criminal behavior, and provide education on legal matters. These daily interactions help students navigate challenges like substance abuse, peer pressure, and gang involvement.
– SROs often step in to help with various issues, including suicide prevention, drug-related problems, family crises, and other school-related concerns. They often become more than just law enforcement; they form friendships with students, staff, and parents, frequently stepping in to assist with situations that go beyond typical police duties.
