The Howell County Rural Fire Department is now accepting applications for two openings in its Junior Firefighter program. The program is open to teens ages 16 to 18 who live within the district or nearby and meet several eligibility requirements.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to calls and training sessions, hold a valid driver’s license, and carry current vehicle insurance. A parent or guardian must attend the applicant’s interview, and students must maintain school grades of C or higher.
Junior Firefighters participate in three scheduled trainings each month and are required to attend at least one. Training sessions are held on the second Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., the second Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m., and the last Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants also respond to department calls that occur after school hours and on weekends.
Those interested in applying may pick up an application at the fire station on K Highway behind South Howell County Ambulance. Questions can be directed by phone at 417‑257‑1270, by email at hcrfd700@gmail.com, or through the department’s Facebook Messenger. Interviews are expected to be scheduled in January.
