MSU-WP Hosts 65 Middle Schoolers for Summer Scholars Academy

Sixty-five enthusiastic middle school students from across the region gathered at Missouri State University–West Plains (MSU-WP) for the Summer Scholars Academy, held June 23–27. The weeklong camp immersed students in hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) experiences designed to inspire learning and exploration.

Participants engaged in interactive classes covering a wide range of topics including healthcare, crime scene investigation, veterinary technology, engineering, agriculture, art, theater, poetry, computer science, and video game production. The program also featured STEAM-based challenges, games, and competitions, fostering creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

At the conclusion of the week, each student received a certificate of completion, a camp T-shirt, and a goodie bag. Trevor Cressman, director of MSU-WP’s Workforce Development and Community Education office, praised the students’ energy and enthusiasm.

“They were engaged, excited and worked hard all week long. We loved seeing them learn and grow,” Cressman said.

Students traveled from West Plains, Cabool, Willow Springs, Mountain View, Birch Tree, Thayer, Alton, Koshkonong, Bakersfield, and surrounding communities to attend the camp. A similar academy for high school students was also held earlier in June for the first time.
