Prescribed Fire Workshop for Landowners Set for June 14 in West Plains

Local landowners interested in using fire as a land management tool are invited to attend a free educational workshop and field tour on Friday, June 14, hosted by the South Central Missouri Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) with support from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and begins at the MDC office at 551 Joe Jones Blvd. Morning sessions will feature expert speakers, including Wes Buchheit of Quail Forever, who will discuss prescribed fire planning, safety, and assistance programs. Two landowners will also share firsthand experiences with controlled burns.

After lunch, provided by MDC, participants will tour a nearby burn-managed site and see live demonstrations of burn tools like drip torches and blower units. A mini trade show will offer information from land management professionals and contractors.

Prescribed fire is an effective, science-backed method for improving wildlife habitat, reducing wildfire risk, and restoring native plant communities. Space is limited; attendees are asked to register by June 10 by emailing scmpba@gmail.com.

The event is open to all, and PBA membership ($25/year) will be available at the door. For more information, visit moprescribedfire.org or contact Denise Vaughn at 417-247-7874.
