Red Cross Urges Blood and Platelet Donations Amid Summer Shortages

  • The American Red Cross is calling on donors across southern Missouri to give blood or platelets now, stressing the urgent need to maintain a stable blood supply during the challenging summer months.

Type O blood, the most requested by hospitals, is especially in demand. Seasonal travel, storms, and other disruptions can reduce donations, making consistent scheduling and attendance at appointments vital.

To encourage participation, donors who give blood or platelets between July 15–31, 2025, will receive a Fandango Movie Reward via email. Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org, via the Blood Donor App, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Upcoming local blood drives include:

  • West Plains
    • July 22: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., First United Methodist Church
    • July 31: 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., West Plains Civic Center

All blood types are needed, and first-time donors can find out their blood type after donating. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health.

For faster check-in, donors are encouraged to complete their health history in advance using RapidPass® at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass.

The American Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood and relies on the generosity of donors to continue its lifesaving mission.
