SCAM ALERT: Utility Phone Calls & Texts

The City of West Plains is warning residents about a new round of scam calls in which callers falsely claim to represent an electric company and threaten immediate disconnection of service. City officials say the calls are designed to create panic and pressure residents into making quick payments to “maintain service.”

The city emphasizes that it does not call or text customers demanding immediate payment and will never request bank account, debit card, or credit card information over the phone. Officials also note that any message claiming power will be shut off unless payment is made immediately — including through a website provided by the caller — is likely a scam. Caller ID numbers can also be spoofed to appear legitimate.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are urged not to provide personal or financial information, to hang up, and to verify their account status only by contacting City Utilities using the phone number listed on their bill or the official city website. City officials say protecting customer safety and security remains a top priority.
