Shannon County Man Charged with Harassment More Charges Pending For Violence Against a Deputy

From the Shannon County Police Department:

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Deputy J.D. Melvin of the Shannon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service in Winona, Missouri, regarding a stalking incident. Upon arrival, Deputy Melvin made contact with the suspect, identified as David Barton.

Barton immediately became hostile, attempted to flee the scene, and violently resisted arrest. During the encounter, Barton physically assaulted Deputy Melvin and made verbal threats against him. Barton was subdued and transported to the Shannon County Jail for booking.

Shockingly, during the intake process in the jail’s booking room, Barton again attempted to instigate a physical altercation and made a dangerous attempt to gain control of Deputy Melvin’s duty weapon — an act that could have led to deadly consequences.
Barton has been formally charged with Class E Felony Harassment. His bond has been set at $5,000.00 cash only. Additional charges are under review related to the assault and attempted weapon disarmament.

“Under the law, the accused is entitled to a presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.”
