Traffic Stop in Ava Leads to Arrest for Multiple Offenses, Firearm Seizure

A routine traffic stop in Ava escalated into a multi-offense arrest Tuesday morning after a local man was found driving with a revoked license, consuming alcohol behind the wheel, and unlawfully possessing a firearm.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., a red Chevrolet Silverado was observed entering the roundabout on Springfield Avenue without signaling its turn onto Jefferson Avenue. The vehicle also lacked illumination on its rear registration plate, prompting a Douglas County deputy to initiate a traffic stop, which concluded on East Pennington Avenue.

Upon contact, the driver identified himself as Brian Schroeder of Ava. The deputy noted a strong odor of alcohol and learned that Schroeder’s driver’s license had been revoked due to multiple prior DWI convictions. Schroeder admitted to consuming alcohol shortly before the stop and was unable to produce valid insurance documentation.
A roadside breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.046. Further inspection of the vehicle uncovered an open Smirnoff Ice beverage in the driver’s door, which Schroeder confirmed he had been drinking.

Following his arrest, Schroeder disclosed the presence of a firearm in the vehicle. A search revealed a Remington .22 caliber rifle under the rear seat. Dispatch confirmed Schroeder’s status as a convicted felon, rendering him prohibited from possessing firearms under Missouri law. The weapon was secured as evidence.

Schroeder was transported without incident to the Douglas County Jail and faces multiple charges, including:
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
• Driving While Revoked
• Consumption of Alcoholic Beverage While Driving
• Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Financial Responsibility
