West Plains High School Jazz Band Shines at Kansas City Jazz Festival

The West Plains High School Jazz Band recently showcased their talent at the 23rd Annual Kansas City 18th and Vine Jazz Band Festival, held April 15–17 at the historic Gem Theater in Kansas City’s renowned 18th and Vine Jazz District. The prestigious three-day event featured performances by 49 jazz bands from across the region.

Performing on April 16, the WPHS Jazz Band earned a top-tier “1” rating for their performance. Following their set, the band received an educational clinic from one of the festival’s judges, offering valuable feedback and musical insight.

In addition to the group’s success, three students were recognized for individual excellence with Outstanding Musicianship Awards: Caleb Kenter (Trumpet), Brenden Lovan (Trombone), and Kadin Ostermeier (Saxophone).

The students also enjoyed a visit to the American Jazz Museum, located just across the street from the performance venue. Highlights included the Louis Prima special exhibition, the famous Blue Room Jazz Club, and legendary artifacts such as Charlie Parker’s saxophone.
