In alignment with Missouri Senate Bill 68 (RSMo 162.207), West Plains Schools have announced they will implement a cell phone-free policy for the 2025–2026 school year. The initiative aims to minimize distractions, boost student engagement, and ensure compliance with new state law.
Under the policy, students will not be permitted to use Personal Electronic Devices during the school day. These devices must be turned off, stored in backpacks, and kept out of sight for the entire day. The district states that more detailed guidance will be shared at a later date.
Personal Electronic Devices are defined as cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, headphones/earbuds, smartwatches, or any other device capable of communication, entertainment, or internet access.
Exceptions to the policy will be made for students with specific educational or health needs, such as those covered under Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans under federal law. Additional allowances may be made for emergency situations or authorized educational purposes.
