Deputy Pauly initially held Ma’afala at gunpoint while Corporal Weaver attempted verbal engagement. As the situation escalated, Pauly deployed a less lethal shotgun, striking Ma’afala causing him to drop the weapon. Officers were then able to restrain and treat Ma’afala for injuries before paramedics arrived.

Inside the residence, Victim 1, a family member, told officers that the altercation began when Ma’afala was seen violently punching the family dog. The confrontation escalated physically, resulting in multiple injuries to Victim 1, including facial trauma and lacerations. Ma’afala allegedly declared his intent to burn the house down with the family inside, and poured gasoline on the front porch before being disarmed of a lighter.

A second family member, Victim 2, who is reportedly pregnant, confirmed the threats and stated she fled the house with two young children during the incident. One of the children expressed fear while speaking with officers.

The dog, a white pitbull, appeared unharmed and was seen playing with the children in the backyard.

Ma’afala was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Domestic Assault, Armed Criminal Action, Resisting Arrest, Arson, and Animal Abuse. The knife used in the incident has been seized as evidence.
