WPPD comments on Electric Department scams

On November 20, the West Plains Police Department received information from the City of West Plains Electric Department of a possible scam. The Police Department was informed a citizen had received a call from a male subject stating he was an employee with the West Plains Electric Department and he was needing to set up a time to come inside the citizen’s home to check electric/utility meters.

It was reported the male subject did not give his name to the citizen. The West Plains Police Department would like the citizens of West Plains and the surrounding area to be aware of these types of phone calls as this could be used as a way for criminals to gain access to your residence to see what is of value and then return when the homeowner is away and burglarize the home.

If anyone has any concerns about someone calling as a City of West Plains employee, attempt to get the caller’s name and then verify with the City of West Plains to check the legitimacy of the call. If City Hall cannot be reached, citizens can contact the Police Department to pass the information along.
