The Cardinals left the winning run on base to end a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium. Willson Contreras hit a two-out double to put the tying run in scoring position before Nolan Arenado was intentionally walked. However, Paul DeJong grounded out to end the game. Nolan Arenado homered in his fifth straight game, while Jordan Montgomery was charged with his sixth loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits in five-and-a-third innings.
Milwaukee starter Wade Miley surrendered a run in the first inning and left the game in the second with a muscle strain. Five arms were used out of the pen and combined to give up just one more run on six hits.
St. Louis remains in last place in the NL Central at 17-and-26. Matthew Liberatore makes his first start of the season when the Cardinals take on Milwaukee again tonight.
