Cardinals and Tigers split doubleheader

The St. Louis Cardinals went 1-and-1 during their doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park yesterday. St. Louis scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win game one 2-1. Alec Burleson tied the game with an RBI single, and Pedro Pages (pronounced pah-HEZ) gave St. Louis the lead with a sacrifice fly. Matthew Liberatore earned the win in relief, while Ryan Helsley picked up his tenth save.

Former Cardinal Jack Flaherty tied an AL record by striking out the first seven batters of the game and finished with a career-high 14 strikeouts in six innings for the Tigers. Kyle Gibson’s lone mistake was a fourth-inning home run. He struck out a season-high 9.

In the second game, the Cardinals gave up 14 hits in an 11-6 loss. Burleson and Brendan Donovan both homered in the losing effort, and Kyle Leahy was charged with the loss after Steven Matz left in the fourth inning having allowed four runs.

The 14-and-16 Cardinals send Miles Mikolas to the mound against the Tigers this afternoon.
