The Drury Lady Panthers have added Sara Mendel, a 6-2 center from Ava, to their 2023-24 signing class. Mendel was Missouri Co-Player of the Year in Class 4. Mendel averaged 18.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1.8 steals for Ava last year. Mendel was named the Player of the Year in the SCA and in District 11 for the second year in a row. Mendel scored 1,485 points and had 911 rebounds in her career and has been named All-State two straight seasons. She led the Bears to three-straight district titles. Mendel is the second state Player of the Year to sign with the Lady Panthers in this off-season as Drury also landed the Class 2 Co-Player of the Year, Kaylee King, out of Ellington High School.
Jared Phay, head coach of the (MSU-WP) Grizzly Basketball team, has signed Lionel Kumwimba for the 2023-2024 season. A native of the Republic of the Congo, the 6-foot, 8-inch forward played for Athletes In Action (AIA) Prep in Ohio, during its inaugural season last season. Kumwimba played a significant role in the team’s successful 24-9 campaign against some of the nation’s best prep schools, Phay said. He turned in several impressive performances, recording double-doubles in scoring and rebounding.
