The Dan Taylor Wrestling Classic

Beginning this December, West Plains will take another step forward in its proud wrestling tradition, hosting a brand-new tournament that will bring together top programs from Missouri and Arkansas. The event will carry a name that already means so much to the community the Dan Taylor Wrestling Classic.

For years, Coach Dan Taylor has been more than just a leader of Zizzer Wrestling. He has been the foundation of the program—its history, its heartbeat, and its identity. His legacy isn’t defined only by victories on the mat or seasons on the schedule, but by the lasting impact he’s made on the people who’ve come through his room.

Coach Lianna Ward knows that impact firsthand.

She recalls the first day she stepped into the wrestling room how Coach Taylor greeted her with a smile that didn’t need words. It was the kind of presence that instantly made you feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger. Even now, she says, that feeling hasn’t faded.

“Every time I see him, I still get excited,” Ward shared. “It’s like I’m still one of his athletes, still learning from him.”

Taylor’s influence reached far beyond technique and training. For Ward, he became the example.

“I remember thinking, I want to be like him someday not just as a coach, but as a person,” she said. “Someone who brings light into people’s lives, who stays positive, who inspires, and who always seems to know exactly what to say at the right moment.”

That kind of legacy can’t be measured in wins and losses. It lives on in the athletes he’s shaped, the confidence he’s built, and the culture he’s created.

Now, as wrestlers from across the region take the mat in West Plains, they’ll do so under a name that represents all of that and more. The Dan Taylor Wrestling Classic won’t just be a competition it will be a continuation of a legacy.

And for a community that takes pride in its programs, its history, and the people who built them, it’s a fitting tribute to a coach who gave so much to the sport and to everyone around him.
