The West Plains Zizzers opened up their new season with a home game against the Class 6 Mountain Home Bombers on Friday night.
Mountain Home got out of the gates fast with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the contest. West Plains answered with a long drive capped off by a Jackson Taylor 3-yard touchdown run to even the score. Both teams exchanged punts before Mountain Home took the lead 14-7 after a 33-yard touchdown pass. After a West Plains punt, Mountain Home drove all the way down the field but fumbled at the 1-yard line. West Plains couldn’t capitalize punting back to Mountain Home who led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Mountain Home scored on their first possession of the second quarter on a 2-yard Miller run to extend their lead to 21-7. Both teams traded punts before West Plains drove down to pull within 21-10 on a 31-yard Cobb Field Goal.
West Plains took the kickoff for the second half and drove 63 yards scoring on a Ethan Miller 1-yard touchdown making the score 21-17 Mountain Home. Mountain Home then answered on a two-play 60-yard drive, scoring on a 50-yard touchdown run by Miller extending the lead to 28-17. Mountain Home fumbled, and West Plains recovered at their own 48, Jackson Taylor scored on a 15-yard run to pull within four points 28-24. Miller once again scored on a long play, this time a reception putting the Bombers back up 11, 35-24.
In the fourth quarter Mountain Home got a 77-yard run from Phillips to put the Bombers up 42-24 with 9:43 left. West Plains’ Jackson Taylor once again found the end zone pulling West Plains within 12 at 42-30. Barrett Miller of Mountain Home scored his 5th touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run extending the lead to 49-30 which is the final score as West Plains will look to get in the win column next week in Springfield as they will face Parkview next Friday night.
