Mets 7, Cardinals 5…Willson Contreras suffers broken arm

The St. Louis Cardinals gave up six runs in the fifth inning of their 7-5 loss to the New York Mets at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals used a Brendan Donovan solo shot to help grab a 3-0 lead in the first inning before Brandon Nimmo tied the game with a three-run blast in the fifth. Pete Alonso added a two-run double later in the frame, while JD Martinez chipped in with an RBI single. Miles Mikolas was tagged for six runs on nine hits in four innings to get charged with his fifth loss, while Alec Burleson and Lars Nootbaar both homered in the losing effort. St. Louis remains in last place in the NL Central at 15-and-21. The Cardinals send Sonny Gray to the mound against the Mets this afternoon.

(St. Louis, MO) — The St. Louis Cardinals won’t have their All-Star catcher for the foreseeable future. Willson Contreras fractured his left forearm during yesterday’s loss to the New York Mets. Contreras suffered the injury when Mets slugger JD Martinez hit him in the arm during a swing in the second inning. The 31-year-old is hitting .280 with six home runs and 12 RBI this season. Catcher Pedro Pages is expected to replace Contreras on the roster.
