Missouri State West Plains Bands Hosting Holiday Performances

WEST PLAINS, MO Celebrate the sounds of the season during upcoming performances by the Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) University/Community and Jazz Bands. 

The University/Community Band will perform on Monday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the West Plains Civic Center theater. The event is being a co-sponsored by the West Plains Council on the Arts, which received partial funding for the project from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and children under 10 are free.

The Jazz Band will perform on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in Putnam Hall, located at 129 Jefferson Avenue in West Plains. Admission is free.

 

I addition to the concerts, Rocky Long, director of the music program, will present on “The Tale of the Carol: Exploring the Musical Traditions” on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Ozarks Heritage Research Center in the Garnett Library.

The Dec. 1 band concert will be a program featuring many of your favorite Christmas and seasonal favorites. Following the performance, concertgoers are invited to enjoy cookies and cocoa in the West Plains Civic Center lobby.

The Jazz Band concert on Dec. 4 will feature a mix of jazz standards, big band charts and season tunes, performed by a talented group of student and community musicians.

The University/Community Band is a traditional concert band ensemble whose membership includes MSU-WP students, high school students, community members and music educators. The band performs two concerts per semester and rehearses from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays at Putnam Hall on the MSU-WP campus when classes are in session. Members can earn college credit for playing in the group if they are registered for the course.

In addition to the University/Community Band, MSU-WP’s Music Program offers a jazz ensemble, pep band, small ensembles and private lessons. New this year, MSU-WP will offer a Community Choir, open to students and the community who have an interest in choir. There is a one-credit course available in the spring semester for students interested.
