Van Buren, MO – One of Missouri’s largest and most beloved drive-in movie theaters is officially open for the season—and this year, it’s offering more than just big-screen entertainment under the stars.
The 21 Drive-In Theatre, nestled in the scenic heart of the Ozark River Valley, has reopened for weekend double-features and its fan-favorite Retro Thursdays, running from early spring through December. Built in 1951 and opened in 1952, the historic single-screen venue can host up to 600 vehicles and features sloped parking, a large grassy area, a playground, and a full concessions stand.
This year, the 21 Drive-In is adding a new twist: primitive overnight camping. Guests can now stay overnight on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday nights, making the nostalgic drive-in experience last just a little longer. Campers can choose single-night passes or opt for full weekend stays, with checkout at 5 p.m. the next day. While facilities are currently limited—offering bathrooms but no showers—the team is hoping to expand amenities in the future based on visitor interest.
“People have been asking for years if they could camp here,” the 21 Drive-In team shared. “So we’re giving it a shot—if folks prove it’s worth the effort, we’ll invest in even more upgrades.”
A few ground rules do apply:
-
Campers may not set up tents in the main parking area until after the night’s final show.
-
Smokeless firepits are allowed during showtimes to avoid obstructing the movie.
-
Campers and RVs must park in designated areas near the marquee ticket booth to avoid blocking views.
For those wanting to make a night of it, the upcoming double-feature line-up includes How to Train Your Dragon (PG) followed by Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning (PG-13) on both Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, starting at 7:00 p.m. each night.
The drive-in is also available for private venue rentals and on-screen advertising for local businesses. Whether you’re there for the movie, the camping, or the retro charm, the 21 Drive-In offers a one-of-a-kind Ozarks experience that continues to evolve, without ever losing its timeless magic.
