Ava, MO. – A man who is currently in jail on charges of stealing a vehicle in December has received additional charges after he allegedly attempted to break out of the Douglas County Jail.
Jason David Smith, age 46 of Bruner, was originally arrested on December 31, 2023, on the charges of stealing a motor vehicle and being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond, has received the additional charges of escape or attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony and damage to jail or jail property. His bond for the new charges is set at $15,000 cash.
The probable cause statement alleges that on January 1, 2024, at 11:26 a.m., Smith was found in the ceiling of B Pod attempting to escape. Smith received injuries in his attempt to escape and damaged several ceiling panels.
He will return to court on these charges on January 18, 2024.
